Freshers Mistakes To Avoid
Freshers

Freshers week can be the most exciting time of the year. But for many, it’s not all fun and games, and it can be really daunting. You’re in a new environment, surrounded by loads of new people. You might be worried about all sorts of different things happening. We pulled out a handful of mistakes you might want to avoid during freshers!

Burning Through Your Cash In The Blink Of An Eye

It’s super easy to get carried away with spending, especially in

Freshers Week

when your

student loan

lands in the bank. Everyone can get a bit spend happy, but it’s a nightmare figuring out life once you’ve blown through your loan in one week, and then have nothing left until your next drop. Have a read of our

Student Budgeting Tips

for some ideas on how you can budget your student loan. Make sure that you are keeping track of your finances, and start as you mean to go on.

Bringing Everything & The Kitchen Sink

It's an all too familiar feeling when you’re packing to go anywhere, on holiday, a weekend away, or moving to uni. You’re going to want to take EVERYTHING! Yes, you’re millions of miles away from home, and bring what you need, but don’t bother bringing the world with you. Wondering whether to take something? Consider a scenario when you might need it, and judge whether that scenario will even come up. Only going to use it 2 or 3 times a year? Might be worth leaving it, you might survive without.

Not Exploring Your New City

Moving to a different city for uni sets you on a path of discovery. It’s not cool to finish uni and move away again, looking back over your past 3, and you’ve barely seen or experienced anything the city has to offer. Uni is the perfect chance to explore, when you have more time on your hands, to get to know both your campus and city a bit better. It’s great for helping you get used to your surroundings, feel more at home, and more settled in your new life, giving you the confidence you need to get involved in activities both at your uni and around your city.

Partying Your Way Right Into A Freshers Flu

Hey, we’ll be the first to tell you to make the most out of your first year at uni. Just keep in mind, it’s easy to overdo it, especially in the first week of freedom. The last thing you need is to land yourself with

freshers flu

or getting run down before you start your fresh new life at uni. We get it, FOMO is a real thing, but you don’t want to exhaust yourself in the first week. You’re not really going to miss out on anything if you don’t go out every single night of freshers. It’s really easy to get caught up in the excitement of new night life in a new city, but you can very quickly wreck your health and immune system. You have the whole three years of uni to make your rounds at the clubs, so don’t worry about getting them all boxed off all in the first week.

Don’t Swerve Your Uni Inductions

Induction events make your transition into the new academic year a whole lot easier for you. You’ll get a chance to figure out life on  campus, as well as getting to know the people on your course. You will also get to know what your uni has to offer and they’ll let you know about how ot get involved in everything there is to offer. Although the world might not end if you miss an introduction event, try not to be a lazy bones.

Buying Your Full Reading List All Brand New

When you just move to Uni, you’ll get given an extensive list of textbooks you’ll need to buy, but you can get a huge amount of your reading list a heck of lot cheaper, if they’re second hand. There are plenty of used books up for sale from students in previous years, so check your Uni facebook groups, Ebay, or plenty of other used books websites you can find in Google. Don’t Forget Your Homebirds

Chances are your family or friends helped move you into uni. Huge favour! Now that they’ve gone back home, you’re left to experience a whole new world! But don’t forget who got you there. Your friends and fam back at home will be missing you, and it might be easy to forget that with everything else going on. Give them a call, a message, anything! Naturally, you’ll keep that homesickness at bay.

Take Care Of Your Health

When you first move to uni it’s a test figuring out your new routine. First steps are making sure you get enough sleep and are eating enough good food. For many, there’ll be loads of late nights, alcohol and partying. Although this is all the fun you’ve been looking forward to, it can take a toll on your health. Still try and look after yourself, give yourself a break with a couple of night ins.

Look For Help When You Need It Most

Having any life struggles? Or finding it hard to keep up with Uni work? If you’re struggling with anything at all, ask someone for help. Whether it’s academic, financial or mental struggles, reach out and talk. Going to uni can be really daunting, and it is a massive transition to a new way of life, so it’s natural to feel uncertain about things. Your university will offer support services to help you out, so make sure you reach out to them if you feel like you need to.

Don’t Isolate Yourself

While it’s important to take time to look after yourself and regain your energy levels, try your best to socialise and get involved with things. Make an effort to get to know people, even if you don’t want to go out clubbing. There are loads of other things you can do throughout freshers week that don’t involve drinking. Don’t Forget About Uni

Last but not least, try not to forget about going to uni! Although the first year might not really count towards anything, you still have to pass the year in order to get through to your other years. Let your hair down and enjoy everything first year has to offer, but try to remember to give yourself a balance. You still want to be getting your assignments in on time.
